The title ‘scales of memory’ alludes to the idea of ‘scales of justice’, and the discourses of justice and human rights in shaping collective memory in local, national and transnational contexts. It also invokes issues of ‘scalarity’ – that is, relations between the scales on which events are remembered – from the personal to the national, global and planetary. The conference is particularly interested in how violence and injustice are remembered and mediated both in aesthetic forms (film, literature, photography) and through juridical and quasi-juridical institutions and forms (NG0s, transitional justice mechanisms and apologies).
RSVP is required to jonathon.zapasnik@anu.edu.au for catering purposes.
